Sungai Duri, Seberang Perai, Penang

Sungai Duri (GPS: 5.20944, 100.52846) is a Malay village in the Sungai Jawi area of Seberang Perai Selatan. The name of the village translates literally as "thorn river", in reference to the thorny plants that grew by the riverbank. It is one of the villages in Penang on the Homestay programme.

Visitors to Sungai Duri can enjoy visiting the many fruit orchards in the village. The best time to visit is of course during the fruit season, when visitors can enjoy durians, rambutans and mangosteen, the three most famous seasonal fruits. There are other non-seasonal fruits grown all year round in Sungai Duri, including the papaya and pineapple.

Visitors can also view and perhaps participate in the making of local delicacies such as the dodol and keropok. Dodol is a sticky delicacy made from ceramelized sugar, which keropok are prawn- and fish-based crackers. The womenfolk of Sungai Duri make ketupat wraps for steaming pressed rice, as well as the weaving of mats and baskets.
