Sungai Jelutong (9 July 2022)
Sungai Jelutong is a small river in
George Town, Penang. It is one of the tributaries of
Sungai Pinang. Sungai Jelutong itself comprises two streams that converge somewhere between Lorong Kaya and Lorong Gemang. One of these streams start somewhere near Taman Seri Damai while the other one starts somewhere in Island Glades. Both are canalised to manage their flow.
Sungai Jelutong flows into Sungai Pinang near the Penang Japanese School, off
Sungai Pinang Road. As with many of the urban rivers in George Town, Sungai Jelutong is often clogged up with trash.
Updates on Sungai Jelutong
- 2 July, 2018
StarMetro reports that the 40-year-old diversion drain for Sungai Jelutong will be upgraded at a cost of RM13.3million. This involves injecting a special type of concrete to strength the culvert structure of the drains which were built in 1973. The diversion drain, which is 450 meters long, was built to divert part of the water of Sungai Jelutong away from Sungai Pinang and into the sea. It runs beneath Jalan Tengku and the junction of Jalan Jelutong and Solok Perak.
