Sungai Junjung is a river in
Seberang Perai, on the Penang Mainland. A tributary of
Sungai Jawi, it flows through Seberang Perai Selatan, through the town of
Simpang Ampat. Sungai Junjung has been canalised for rice growing purposes, and today comprises three parallel streams. The main river has its source somewhere at Kampung Jawi Sempit, on the eastern part of Seberang Perai, near the
Kedah border. Sungai Junjung empties into
Sungai Jawi at
Bukit Tambun. In addition, there is a northern branch of the river, called Sungai Junjong Mati, which also empties into Sungai Jawi.
Sungai Junjung was mentioned in a 29 June, 1861, article in
The Straits Times1. It reads:
The Junjong, the next to the south, is also of the same character, its sources being in the nearest hill- ange [sic], but the channel is deeper than that of the Juru, and small junks and schooners occasionally enter to load or discharge cargoes. This river is joined to the Tingah by a broad salt-water arm running in a north and south direction, and here the system of salt creeks terminates. as the Krian, the next to the south, is a genuine fresh-water river ...
