Sungai Nibong Kecil (GPS: 5.33107, 100.28703) is a place between Bukit Jambul and Bayan Baru in Penang. It is part of Sungai Nibong. In a traditional sense, Sungai Nibong Kecil stretches from the Relau junction to the Petronas petrol station in Kampung Jawa, according to the flow of the river of the same name.
The namesake Sungai Nibong Kecil is today canalised for much of its course. It is visible along Jalan Tun Dr Awang, next to Texchem, the Bayan Baru Red Bridge crosses it. Meanwhile, much of the Sungai Nibong Kecil neighbourhood has been developed into residential estates such as Taman Melati Jaya and Seri Nibung Apartments. However the village of Sungai Nibong Kecil still exists, located sandwiched between Taman Melati Jaya and Bayan Baru.
Sungai Nibong Kecil is served by Rapid Penang Bus No. 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, 307, 308 and 705 along Jalan Tun Dr Awang.
Location Review
Sungai Nibong Kecil is about 13.1 km from Komtar, making it of moderate distance from the city centre. It is ideal for people working in the Bayan Lepas area.
10 February, 2016Penang Property Talk reports that Hunza is developing the area in Sungai Nibong Kecil in Bayan Baru. To be called Penang International Commercial City, it will be developed in three phases beginning in 2017, for completion in 2026. The first phase, with a gross development value of RM5 billion, will see a shopping mall, medical centre, a BPO tower, a hotel and 1,792 units of serviced apartments and apartments. The second and third phases, on a 43.36 acre plot, will see the development of more apartments, a hotel and a collage. The second and third phases will add another 9.4 million sqft of development to the area.
28 September, 2013The Star reports that Hunza is developing a 16.1-hectare plot at Sungai Nibong Kecil within Bayan Baru. The project will have a gross development value of RM7 billion and will include two four-to-five-star hotels, a shopping mall, college, high-end condominiums and office towers. It will be four times the size of Gurney Paragon.
10 August, 2013: A major fire at around 5:00 pm destroyed many village houses in Sungai Nibong Kecil next to the Ideal One Sky Condominium. Residents of the condominium block came out to watch the blaze from the balcony.
Traffic in Sungai Nibong Kecil
Traffic is usually quite smooth along Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim, except during the morning and evening rush hour, as motorist pass through the area on the way to Relau, Sungai Ara and Paya Terubong.
