Chong Beng Seah Tan Si Chong Soo (19 October 2014)
Sungai Nibong Tan Kongsi is one of the three brotherhood associations of the Tan clansmen in Penang. Its official name is Chong Beng Seah Tan Si Chong Soo, 宗盟社陳氏宗祠. Located in the neighbourhood of Sungai Nibong Besar, a stone's throw from the namesake river, it is believed to have been erected some time in the early part of the 20th century.

The Chong Beng Seah Tan Si Chong Soo ancestral temple was completed in 1962, taking four years to build. It was originally called Chen Shi Zhong Men She, but was renamed to its present name to show that it is a clan association of Tan clansmen regardless their ancestral birthplace and district.
At the time it was built, the Sungai Nibong Tan Kongsi fronts a much smaller main road. Today, the Bayan Lepas Elevated Highway runs directly overhead in front of it, blocking much of the view of the clan temple.

The Sungai Nibong Tan Kongsi is decorated in the southern Chinese style. The roof is embellished with rearing dragons and ornamentations of figurines and flowers in chien nien, or broken pottery. The frontage has a pair of columns and three doorways. The doors are painted with door guardian warriors.
The Chong Beng Seah Tan Si Chong Soo was founded by Tan clansmen who traced their ancestry to Shantou (formerly transliterated as Swatow, Traditional Chinese: 汕頭, Simplified Chinese: 汕头, Penang Hokkien: Sua1thau2) in present-day Guangdong Province of China. They formed their association in 1949, with official registration finalized in 1953. The clansmen originally settled in Balik Pulau where they became farmers.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
