Sunken Garden, Penang Botanic Gardens (25 May 2013)
The Sunken Garden (GPS: 5.43731, 100.29189) is a garden within the
Penang Botanic Gardens. It is located on the north side of Jalan Kebun Bunga, between the Formal Garden and the
Bambusetum.
The Sunken Garden was conceived when the Penang Botanic Gardens was under the leadership of Mr Cheang Kok Choy, its first local curator. For many decades, the Sunken Garden was abandoned, and became overgrown until around 2007, when it was included as part of the RM7 million Botanic Gardens expansion plan.

Plans to rehabilitate the Sunken Garden was put in place in May 2012. According to the State Botanic Gardens department assistant director Salasiah Yusop, an open tender was to be called. Over the next eight to ten months, the Sunken Garden was gradually returned to its former glory, as the thick undergrowth was cleared and well manicured grass was planted in its place.
The multi-tiered Sunken Garden slopes down from the roadside. There is a small pond as well as rock features that were either added or cleaned up. The garden was once again open to the public by May 2013.
