S.Wine Queensbay Mall (GPS: 5.33379, 100.30651) is a cafe specializing in pork products. This is the first S.Wine Cafe in Penang and the third in the country, behind outlets at Publika and Tropicana City Mall in the Klang Valley. This restaurant is a meat-eater's delight, particularly if he is into pork. Yes, it is a strictly non-halal place where almost every item is served with pork, even the crème brûlée! Alcohol such as white and red wines are also available.
S.WINE opened at Queensbay Mall on 15 April. The deco is a chic black-on-white motif. My wife and I had the pleasure of trying it out the following Monday, 17 April, along with a bunch of food bloggers. We were seated up in three rows and various dishes were served, some to each row while some to specific rows. Nevertheless, we would vacate our spot and went over to our neighbouring rows to photograph the items there, even though we did not sample them.

We started our meal with the Warm Pork Confit, Watermelon & Lychee Salad (RM38). What an unusual combination! Nevertheless, the heavy taste of the grilled pork balances against the juiciness of the watermelon and the lychee, which are cushioned with various greens and drenched with spicy lemongrass vinegrette. There was basil and parsley in this salad, and they contribute to the aroma, while the pork was crispy.
Next comes the Grilled Pork Neck & Green Mango Salad. On a base of lettuce and parsley is the grilled pork neck, green mango and surprisingly, pomelo! The juiciness of the pomelo bursts forth when you chew it with the pork. Together with the greens, it offers a refreshing start to a meal.
Very soon, the dishes left the kitchen and were landing on our table at rapid succession, so much so that everybody was busy photographing and trying the various items. I tried to identify each item served, but did not have much time to do that, on top of making sure I tried each thing before they disappear. It was fun and furious!
Naturally, there are dishes that are truly outstanding. I love the pasta here, particularly the Bacon & Salted Egg Carbonara and the Pasta Bak Chor Mee with Pork Lard, Minced Soy Pork and Vinegar. Between the two dishes, I really couldn't decide which I like more. One mouth of this, and I liked it, another mouthful of that, and I liked that!
All in all, it was a wonderful outing with a very heavy meal. And the penultimate item (the one before the dessert) is the heaviest of them all: Whole Slab BBQ Ribs! Looking at it makes me feel like Fred Flintstone. I jumped right in to attack it.

Dessert was crème brûlée and Bubur Cha Cha. The crème brûlée is topped with a slices of strawberry and a single crispy bacon. What a delightful combination! Does meat go with crème brûlée? Now S.WINE teaches me that it does, and very well too.
The Bubur Cha Cha, unfortunately, was a disappointment to me and the folks on my table. Maybe because we are Penang people, and we make Bubur Cha Cha at home, so we are a bit picky when it comes to this dish. We immediately called the folks at S.WINE to our table, and explained to them how we felt this item could be improved. In fact I think it is too risky to serve Bubur Cha Cha to Penang folks. Apart from this, my wife and I enjoyed all the other items at S.WINE, and we thanked the management of the restaurant for the pleasure of trying out their food.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
