Nutmeg Potpourri Sculpture, Taman Mini Balik Pulau (2 February 2013)
Taman Mini Balik Pulau is an urban park in Balik Pulau new town. It occupies the strip of land between Jalan Tun Sardon and the MPPP Balik Pulau Building. Ground breaking for the project was carried out on 20 April, 2012, and the park was completed and officially opened by the Penang Chief Minister the Right Honourable Tuan Lim Guan Eng on 2 September of the same year.
Taman Mini Balik Pulau was built by the Penang Island Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang) at a cost of RM190,000. As Balik Pulau is well known as the centre for the production of nutmeg, the fruit was selected as the theme of the park. This is reflected in its centrepiece, the beautiful Nutmeg Potpourri Sculpture.

I am impressed and delighted that the nutmeg potpourri is selected as centrepiece of the park. It is a fitting sculpture to represent Balik Pulau. I suppose durian farmers would be a little disappointed, but considering the exposure Balik Pulau Durian has received (in no small measure due to this website), the lovely nutmeg should in this case be the lauded choice. The nutmeg potpourri sculpture continues local government effort in installing sculptures depicting motif drawn from the surrounding locality. Another similar project that comes to mind is the Teluk Bahang Monkey Cup Roundabout.
Another highlight of Taman Mini Balik Pulau is the sculptured wall relief, also depicting nutmeg as the motif. The park is planted with a variety of flowering shrubs as where as trees. As of now, the trees are still sapplings. A winding footpath connects the central square, in front of the wall relief, to the nutmeg potpouri sculpture. Benches are also installed for visitors to use.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
