Tan Yeow Wooi Culture Research Studio

Tan Yeow Wooi Culture Research Studio (15 September 2012)

Tan Yeow Wooi Culture Research Studio is the office of conservation architect Tan Yeow Wooi. It is housed in a restored late 19th century shophouse at 81 China Street, which was built along with its next door neighbour, 79 China Street.

81 China Street has a plain Chinese townhouse façade. The front door is flanked by a pair of windows with air-vents above them. On the upper floor is a set of three windows with louvre shutters. They replace the glass louvres that were mounted on the building prior to restoration.

81 China Street was once known as Cheng Ho Hean. It is next door to the Alpha Utara Art Gallery, which was known as Cheng Ho Seah. Tan Yeow Wooi was responsible for the restoration of both.
