Tang Yeok Khang, Penang-born visual artist

Tang Yeok Khang is a visual artist from Penang. Though born in Bukit Mertajam, over the past 15 years he has been based in Kuala Lumpur. Mr Tang has held exhibitions in Penang regularly, but he was largely unknown outside the art circle, until he became one of the three artists engaged to paint the murals for the 101 Lost Kittens project.

After graduating from the Malaysian Institute of Art with a diploma in Interior Design, Tang dabbled into illustrations, and worked for a while as a freelancer, before establishing his own landscape design firm. However the tug of the art world was so strong that he eventually went full time in 2010.

Tang Yeok Khang works mostly on canvas. His usual medium include charcoal, watercolour and acrylic. The majority of his paintings include human subject, so the 101 Lost Kittens project came as a departure of sorts for him, as it is the first time that he is doing animals, and on such a prominent scale.

The 101 Lost Kittens project was hatched by a co-owner of China House art gallery, who was involved in LASSie, which stands for Langkawi Animal Shelter & Sanctuary, an organisation created to raise awareness of stray animals.

At time of writing (9 June 2013), two of the twelve murals have been done, though not fully completed yet. The first, which I call the Giant Cat Mural, is based on one of the cats at the shelter, whose name is Skippy. As such, that mural may eventually be called Skippy.

The second mural in the works is entitled Fortune Cat. It is based on the cat figurines that are found in many Japanese restaurants, placed on the counter top with one hand waving to customers, as a sign for auspiciousness. The Fortune Cat mural shows a real-life cat looking at the Fortune Cat mural, and wondering how he too can enjoy the good life and good fortune.

Penang Travel Tips will highlight work hand-in-hand with 101 Lost Kittens. There will be an online contest from 23 to 29 June. Contest details will be shared on the 101 Lost Kittens Facebook Page.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
