Tean Ling Tong Temple (9 March 2013)
Tean Ling Tong is a Chinese temple in Kampung Melayu, Air Itam. It is located along
Lintang Zoo, at the junction with Zoo Road. If I am not mistaken, this is the temple where its resident monk, named Fa Kong, who once created a whimsical menagerie that gave Zoo Road its name. The menagerie was even given the name Penang Zoological Gardens, despite its modest collect. That was in the 1920s, between the two world wars. Needless to say, that zoo is nowhere to be seen today.
Tean Ling Tong Temple is entered through a grand archway. Its cement compound is somewhat bare, to afford space for devotees on feast days. On the far end is a Tibetan-style stupa that holds a columbarium. The main temple building itself has softly slanted roof ridges, resembling that of many Taoist temples.
