Teluk Bayan Hawker Centre, Pantai Jerejak, Sungai Nibong (20 October 2012)

Teluk Bayan Hawker Centre (GPS: 5.34089, 100.30204), also known as Telok Bayan Food Court, was a major food court in Penang. It is now called Golden Bay Food Court. Originally located along Jalan Kampung Relau, it relocated to Jalan Aziz Ibrahim after its original site was taken for development. The present site along Jalan Aziz Ibrahim has also been declared the Nibong Indah Hawker Centre by the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP).

Teluk Bayan Hawker Centre has a wide variety of hawker food available, among them claypot chicken rice, bak kut teh, bean sprout chicken rice, economy rice, char koay teow, curry mee, koay kak, grilled fish, grilled chicken wings, apom, wan tan mee, mee udang, belacan rice, chee cheong fun, Hong Kong chee cheong fun, satay and Hokkien mee, among others.

Tim's Taste Test

22 October, 2014 It has been a very long time since we last ate at Teluk Bayan, so we decided to pay it another visit. It was raining when we arrived, which perhaps explains why there are so few stalls opened and also so much fewer customers. We remember Teluk Bayan when it operated behind the Sungai Nibong Shell Station. At that time, it was doing roaring business. But after it was forced to shut down, there as a hiatus before it reopened on Jalan Aziz Ibrahim. We also went to the new location and saw that business was also quite good, but today, it seems that business here has slowed down considerably since our last visit.

There are much fewer stalls now, and so much fewer choices. I order the char koay teow while my wife order the mee udang. This is how the dishes look like:

The char koay teow is just as tasty as I remembered it to be. However, at RM4.50, I am getting only average-size prawns. Nevertheless, I remember that places that give me bigger prawns are charging me RM5.50 and above.

The mee udang costs RM7.00 and give three prawns. With shell, they look bigger than the prawns of the char koay teow. It used to offer even more prawns, but I suppose the rising prices have reduced the number of prawns. Now the "special" costs RM11.00. I am also mindful that the mee udang at Pisa Corner now (Oct 2014) costs RM15.00

On the whole, we find both the char koay teow and mee udang to be above average. If I were to find a fault of any of these, it would be that the prawns of the char koay teow could have been bigger for RM4.50, and that the number of prawns for the RM7.00 mee udang is now only three.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
