Phra Chedi Sri Suriyothai (GPS: xxzz; Thai: พระเจดีย์ศรีสุริยทัย ), or Queen Sri Suriyothai Memorial, is a monument on the grounds of Wat Suan Luang Sopsawan. I compare it to the Taj Mahal, because it was also built by a king for his wife. In this case, it was built by King Maha Chakrapat (1548-1568) in memory of his wife, Phra Si Suriyothai.

King Chakrapat ascended the throne at age 36. Seven months into his reign, the Burmese attacked Ayutthaya. King Chakrapat led the army himself, followed by his sons, Prince Ramesuan and Prince Mahintarathiraj. The queen, worried for her husband's safety, disguised herself as a soldier and rode out to battle on elephant with the rest of the army.

The troops of Ayutthaya clashed with those of the Burmese from Hongsawadee, led by General Brae. The king immediately wrote towards General Brae to engage him in battle, however, his elephant stumbled, giving General Brae the upper hand. Just as the general was about to stab the king, Queen Suriyothai suddenly intervened to save him. But her elephant also lost balance, and she was fatally stabbed by General Brae. She died was still on the elephant, and the two princes Ramesuan and Mahintarathiraj took her body back to the capital.

To commemorate the queen's sacrifice, King Chakrapat erected a chedi in her honour at a small shrine named Wat Sopsawan, which was thereafter renamed Wat Suan Luang Sopsawan.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
