Wat Chiang Man (GPS: 18.79379, 98.98979; Thai: วัดเชียงมั่น ) is a major Thai Buddhist monastery in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Its name means The Monastery of the Fortified City. Founded by King Mangrai, the founder of Chiang Mai, in the year 1297, it is the oldest monastery in the city. In accordance to Brahmanic and Buddhist traditions, the king built his palace on the northern part of his fortified city.

The most striking feature of Wat Chiang Man is its chedi, which dates to the 15th century. It has a high redented square base , an octagonal middle portion and a bell shape at the top, reflecting both Sinhalese and Sukhothai influences. Due to the base having statues of stuccoed elephants protruding out of it - reminiscent to Ruwanweliseya Dagoba of Anuradhapura - causing it to be known as Chedi Chang Lom, or "Stupa Surrounded by Elephants".

The main viharn or assembly hall of Wat Chiang Man is located to the east of the chedi. It was restored in the 1920s. There are porticos at either ends, with a large seated Buddha occupying the rear portico.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
