Wat Phra Chao Mengrai, Chiang Mai (24 October, 2006)
Wat Phra Chao Mengrai (GPS: 18.78482, 98.98411; Thai: วัดพระเจ้าเม็งราย

) is one of the many Thai Buddhist monasteries in the Old City of
Chiang Mai, Thailand. Its entrance is at Ratchamangka Soi 6. The temple is also known as Wat Khankhat and Wat Sisoithachang.
Inside the viharn of this monastery is a standing Buddha, said to have been fashioned after King Mengrai's appearance. That statue was intended for Wat Chiang Man, but the cart that had carried the statue from Wiang Kum Kam broke down at Wat Phra Chai Mengrai. As in such cases, this was taken as an omen to be heeded, and thus the statue ended up at this monastery instead.
One of the highlights of Wat Phra Chao Mengrai are the statues on its entrance gate. At the time I photographed it, the statues were whitewashed, but from Google Street View's photo of Nov 2017, they have been painted in various colours.
