Wat Yang Kuang วัดยางกวง , Chiang Mai

Wat Yang Kuang, Chiang MaiWat Yang Kuang, Chiang Mai (24 October, 2006)

Wat Yang Kuang (GPS: 18.776, 98.98901; Thai: วัดยางกวง ) is a Thai Buddhist monastery in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is located on Suriyawong Alley, to the south of the Old City.

When I visited Wat Yang Kuang in 2006, I only saw a heap of rubble with an ancient stupa right in the middle. Since then, a proper monastery has been built around the site.

Wat Yang Kuang is believed to have been mention in a Haripunchai poem dating back to 1517, where it was referred to as Wat Nang Rou. That name is believed to be the former name of this temple. In 1781-1807, King Kavila relocated the Tuen people from a Wat Yang Kuang in Chiang Tung, in Myanmar, to resettle in this area in Chiang Mai, and supposedly, the name Wat Yang Kuang supplanted that of Wat Nang Rou back then.

A large bronze Buddha head was discovered at Wat Yang Kuang, and has moved to the Chiang Mai National Museum. The Buddha head was given the name Phra Saen Savae.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
