Khao Yai National Park, Thailand


Khao Yai National Park is the first national park in Thailand, established on 18 September, 1962. Covering an area of 2,168 sq km, it is still the second largest in the kingdom. The name Khao Yai means "Big Mountain". The national park is situated in the Sankambeng Mountain Range, to the southwest of the Khorat Plateau.

Khao Yai National Park has a diverse landscape including grasslands and evergreen forests ranging in altitude from 400 m to 1,000 m above sea level. It hold thousands of species of places and a wide variety of wildlife including 320 species of birds and 67 species of mammals. Among the animals living in Khao Yai include the Asiatic black bear, the Asian elephant, the gaur, gibbons, sambar deer, leopard, and Malayan sun bears.

Due to its importance, Khao Yai was made an ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984. In 2005, along with the Dong Phaya Yen mountains, it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site under the name Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai Forest Complex.
