Phuket City is the capital of Phuket Province, which encompasses the whole island as well as a few outlying islets. The town has historical buildings of Sino-Portuguese architecture dating back to the 19th century, when it was the hub for tin-mining activities on the island. Some of the townhouses are similar to those that you would find elsewhere in Thailand and even Malaysia. Formerly known as Phuket Town, it was given city status or thesaban nakhon เทศบาลนคร on 13 February, 2004, and is since styled as Phuket City, though the name "Phuket Town" continues to be popularly used.
Phuket City, interestingly, is predominantly Chinese, particularly Hokkien. Many of them have relatives in Penang, with which the island maintain close links. Overlooking the city is Khao Rang Hill, on which stands the statue of the most prominent Chinese in southern Thailand, Khaw Sim Bee.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
