Than Hsiang Temple (GPS: 5.31657, 100.28654) (Traditional/Simplified Chinese: 檀香寺) is a Buddhist temple and non-profit organisation located at
Sungai Keluang,
Bayan Lepas, Penang. It comprises the temple building and a multi-storey administrative building known as Wisma Than Hsiang. The building was built on a piece of land on
Jalan Tokong Ular, a remnant of the Bayan Lepas Main Road.
Than Hsiang Temple was established as part of Than Hsiang Fund in January 1990. The name chosen for it, Than Hsiang, means "sandalwood". The objective of Than Hsiang Fund was to promote Buddhist education and enhance the welfare of the community, and cultivate the Buddhist lifestyle. Among the educational programs carried out include the establishment of the Than Hsiang kindergarten, the Than Hsiang Buddhist Research Centre and the Klintiendharm International Buddhist College.
Than Hsiang Fund looked after the welfare of the community by establishing Wan Ching Yuen Centre, Mitra Welfare Centre and the Than Hsiang Free Clinic. Than Hsiang's engagement in cultivating the Buddhist lifestyle includes holding Amitabha Recitation retreats, the Eight Precepts cultivation program, Taking Refuge and Five Precepts ceremony and other activities such as Chinese New Year Lamp lighting, Ching Ming Dharma assembly, Wesak Day celebrations, and celebrating the Ullambana Festival.
Among the services provided by Than Hsiang Temple include a restaurant and canteen service vegetarian food and organic food, running a shop selling Buddhist items, and since December 2004, acts as a registrar of marriages.
