The Edison George TownThe Edison George Town (12 August 2016)

The Edison George Town (GPS: 5.4207, 100.33491) is a small luxury hotel in George Town, Penang. Located on Leith Street, it occupies the bungalow built by early 20th century tycoon Yeoh Wee Gark in 1906. The bungalow, commonly known as The Venus, or Yeoh Wee Gark Mansion, was designed by David Nathanial. Before its present incarnation, it was known as the Cathay Hotel.

The Edison George Town is a member of SLH, the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World, a hallmark of quality. It offers 35 beautifully appointed rooms, serving as a serene oasis to discerning guests. At this upscale establishment, you get to experience the opulence of the early 20th century within the 21st century context.

Observing strict heritage guidelines enforced within the World Heritage Site, The Edison George Town was restored to its original appearance. The stucco and plasterwork were simply repaired and restored without any changes to the appearance of the building. Floor tiles are the original. Only when the original is beyond repair is it replaced with replicas that are as faithful to the actual as can be achieved.

On the rear end of the mansion is the kitchen area, called The Lounge, providing inhouse guest a free flow of snacks and drinks. There is various fruit juices as well as soft drinks and local snacks from yesteryear. The Lounge is comfortably spacious, allowing guests to relax and unwind. Beyond The Lounge is the garden area, with cabanas and water feature.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
