The Light Hotel Penang's Christmas Buffet Review

It's the time of the year once again when we start to enjoy lovely Christmas songs and hymns. As my wife and I stepped into The Light Hotel Penang, we were engulfed by the mood of Christmas. The hotel has done a marvellous job, turning their cavernous lobby into a winter wonderland. The centrepiece was a huge, well-lit Christmas tree with lots and lots of sparkling lights. Arrayed all around the tree were gifts galore. A big snowman grinned at us next to a teddy bear.

The Christmas buffet review was being held at Spice Brasserie, the flagship dining outlet of the hotel. When we arrived, all the dishes were ready. Two Santarina greeted us as we walked in. The lovely Director of Marketing & Communications, Ms Siti Fatimah came over to greet us. Then we met up and exchanged greetings with the other team members of the hotel, including Mr Veera Prabu and Mr Mohd Mahadi. It was great to meet up again after a few months. We also said hi to many of our friends from the print and social media who were there to join us.

What a lot of food, all lined up in various food islands and stations within the enormous restaurant. Some of my favourites items were there, including Cheesy Prawn Thermidor and Salmon in Puff Pastry. No Christmas buffet would be without the Roast Turkey, of course, or the Christmas Yule Log. They were all there, of course.

An entire section is devoted to seafood. There was Couscous with Clams, Oyster Motoyaki, and different seafood on ice including crabs, scallops, mussels and oysters, to name some. There was also Seabass Fillet with Lemon Cream Sauce, Seafood Pie, Glazed Mussel in Spice Bean Sauce and Mashed Potatoes with Smoked Salmon and Scallions.

If you like roasted items, you will find at this buffet Stuffed Leg of Lamb Marinated in Italian Herbs with Almond & Dried Fruit Stuffing, Roast Beef with Mixed Capsicum and Garlic Pepper Sauce, Roast Duck with Mango Sauce, and of course, the Roast Turkey with Giblet Sauce and Cranberry Sauce.

One of the outstanding features of buffets at The Light Hotel Penang is that, on top of the seasonal dishes, there is a line of Indian items as well as teh tarik and coffee, which you don't get elsewhere. During this buffet, there was Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Briyani with Cashew Nuts and Raisins and Fish Sultani.

Food was plentiful, but stomach space limited. So, as you could imagine, to enjoy to the max, we took very economical portion of as many items as we could - but still were unable to try everything. When we were done with the savoury items, I headed for the dessert station, where I had the Crème Brûlée, macaron (I could manage only one, even if I wish I could eat more!), Apple Crumble, to name a few.

What a wonderful meal! My wife and I are most thankful to The Light Hotel Penang for inviting us. Now, do take a look at the photos we shot at the buffet, and hopefully, you might also consider trying out their buffets this coming season!

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
