"Too Hot" Sculpture, Weld Quay, George Town

Too Hot is a steel-rod sculpture installed on the wall of the old Swettenham Pier warehouse facing Weld Quay, in George Town, Penang. The sculpture based on the caricature by Reggie Lee celebrates the Mee Goreng, also called Kelinga Mee in Hokkien, believed to have been created here in George Town.

As with many of the famous Penang hawker dishes, the Mee Goreng was created to feed the sailor and coolies working in the Penang Port. The port became a bustling harbour particularly from the fourth quarter of the 19th century, when tin and other raw material were exported from here, while manufactured goods brought in. In addition to Mee Goreng, the Char Koay Teow is also believed to have its origin here.
