Sharjah (Arabic: الشارقة) is the third largest city in the
United Arab Emirates, and the capital of the Emirate of Sharjah. The city covers 235.5 sq km (90.9 sq mi) and has a population of 801,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human settlement in Sharjah is said to date back five thousand years. The modern emirate was established by the Qawasim clan of the Huwayla tribe in the early 18th century. It accepted a protectorate from Britain in 1820 to fend off Ottoman aggressions. It was one of the founding emirates of the United Arab Emirates in 1971.
As with Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Sharjah is fast developing its tourism infrastructure.
