Sharjah (Arabic: الشارقة) is the third largest city in the United Arab Emirates, and the capital of the Emirate of Sharjah. The city covers 235.5 sq km (90.9 sq mi) and has a population of 801,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human settlement in Sharjah is said to date back five thousand years. The modern emirate was established by the Qawasim clan of the Huwayla tribe in the early 18th century. It accepted a protectorate from Britain in 1820 to fend off Ottoman aggressions. It was one of the founding emirates of the United Arab Emirates in 1971.
As with Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Sharjah is fast developing its tourism infrastructure.
Visiting Sharjah
You can easily reach Sharjah City from Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) or Dubai International Airport (DXB). From SHJ, you can take a shuttle bus to downtown Sharjah. There is also a public bus no. 111 from the airport to the Rashidiya Station of the Dubai Metro. If you arrive at DXB, the journey by taxi to downtown Sharjah costs about Dhs 100.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
