Upper Penang Road is the pedestrianized section of Penang Road between the two branches of Farquhar Street. It has a number of well-preserved shophouses that have been converted into bistros and pubs. Among the historic mansions along Upper Penang Road is 1 Penang Road, formerly the residence of the fourth wife of Dr Sun Yat-sen.

Upper Penang Road is the nightlife part of George Town, the watering hole for expatriates. In a way, it is similar to Clarke Quay in Singapore, but on a smaller scale. The biggest beverage outlet in the area is Slippery Señorita.
