Urban Exchange International Street Art Festival

Urban Xchange (22 November 2014)


Urban Exchange is an international street art festival organised by a Berlin-based urban arts centre and Hin Bus Depot Art Centre. It is being held in Penang from 15 to 23 November, 2014. It involves the participation of artists from various countries including (in alphabetical order by country): Rone (Australia), Don John (Denmark), Karl Addison (Germany), Anatas Dubra and Ernest Zacharevic (both from Lithuania), Donald Abraham, Bibichun, Kenji Chai, Fauzan Faud, Fri Till Dea, Jojo Yusof (all from Malaysia), Sam Loh/SKL0 (Singapore), TankPetrol (Manchester), Mr Toll (United States) and Elle (United States).

The tallest of the murals to be painted will be a 34-meter work to adorn Glow Penang. The longest will stretch 30 meters on the façlade of outlets on Beach Street. In addition to the murals painted within the inner city of George Town, other locations include Botanica in Balik Pulau, Chulia Street, Nagore Road, Bawasah Road, Victoria Street and Toh Aka Lane.

In addition to the outdoor street art, there is also an indoor exhibition at the Hin Bus Depot entitled Urban Xchange: Crossing Over.

My Favorite Piece

My favorite piece from Urban Xchange, as of time of writing (22 November 2014), is the portrait of the lady above. Although it is larger than life, I really like how the artist has integrated the grains to the building at Nagore Mews to her facial features. I also felt the eyes were beautifully rendered. This is one that I can stare on for a long, long while.
