Victoria Green, Penang (16 July 2008)
Victoria Green, or
Padang Victoria, is the playing field of the
Chinese Recreation Club (CRC) in
George Town, Penang. It is bordered by
Pangkor Road, Burmah Road and the CRC clubhouse complex. The road leading to the clubhouse was also subsequently called Victoria Green, after the playing field, and is known today as
Jalan Padang Victoria.
Victoria Green was named after Queen Victoria, the British monarch who was reigning when the CRC was established. The
statue of Queen Victoria, near the Pangkor Road-Burmah Road junction of Victoria Green, was only completed in 1930, long after the queen had passed on.
