Dong Khoi is the main commercial street in Ho Chi Minh City. It was formerly known as
Rue Catinat during the French colonial era, named after Nicolas Catinat, the 18th century French marshall. The road has a number of big hotels such as the Hotel Continental, Hotel Majestic and Grand Hotel, featured in Graham Greene's novel,
The Quiet American. Other sights at or near Dong Khoi includes the Saigon General Post Office, the Givral Restaurant and Café, the People's Committee Building, the Municipal Theater and the Notre Dame Cathedral.
Many of the stately establishment along Dong Khoi were shut down under the communist, and only reopened after the economic liberalization came into being in 1986. Today, Dong Khoi is a street with smart hotels and boutiques.
