Thái Nguyên is the largest city in the northern mountain area of Vietnam. The capital of the eponymous province, Thái Nguyên has a population of 150,000 people (2011 estimate) and is the 9th largest city in Vietnam.
Formerly a military base, Thái Nguyên is today given over to civilian rule and is gradually developing as a tourist destination in northern Vietnam. The city also has an industrial economy based on the production of steel.

The surrounding Thái Nguyên Province covers 3,534.45 sq km and has a population of 1.15 million people. There are also eight ethnic tribes in the area.

This is the largest museum of the indigenous people of Vietnam. Established in 1960, it occupies a 39,000 sq m area displaying artifacts representing the 54 ethnic tribes in Vietnam.

- Phuong Hoang Cave
One of the largest cave systems in Vietnam, located some 40 km from Thái Nguyên City.

One of the largest national parks in Vietnam.
