Weld Quay Historic Godowns

62 Weld Quay62 Weld Quay (12 April 2013)

Lining Weld Quay are historic godowns built in the late 1920s. Only a few of these remain today, and you can find them in between later buildings. These godowns have stucco façades with their year of completion stated.

The historic godowns of Weld Quay were built at the tail-end of the economic boom that brought about the biggest influx of Chinese immigrants into George Town, and just before the onset of the Great Depression. Many of these warehouses have been converted to other uses, including as offices as well as other businesses. They reflect early representations of the Art Deco or Art Nouveau styles of architecture. None, as far as I can see, continue to function for their original purpose.
