Wisma Pandu Puteri (19 May 2013)
Wisma Pandu Puteri Pulau Pinang is the
Penang Girl Guides Headquarters. It occupies a plot of land at the junction of Scotland Road and Jalan Air Itam. The building was officiated by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, who was then the president of the Guide Guides Association of Malaysia, on 20 February, 1982. As with the Scouting movement in Penang, the Girl Guides also had their start with the Methodist schools, or rather, the Anglo-Chinese Girls School, as it was known at the time.
The world Girl Guides movement can be said to have begun in 1907 as a spin-off from the Scouting movement. In 1910, the Girl Guides was established in the United Kingdom as a separate organisation from that for boys. From then on, other Girl Guides chapters were established in various other countries, though they trace their roots to the one in the United Kingdom.
The initiative to begin a Girl Guides movement in Penang was mooted by three leaders from the Anglo-Chinese Girls Schools, Miss Ford, Miss King and Miss Pykett, in 1917. At that time, the movement had its regional headquarters in India, and was under the Young Women Christian Association. Lady Guillemard acted as the President while Mrs Cavendish as the Superintendent. The organisation was officially established in 1919.
