Wu Lien Teh Garden (23 September 2012)
Wu Lien Teh Garden, or Taman Wu Lien Teh, is a minor road in the Green Lane area of
George Town, Penang. It connects
Jalan Sir Hussein in the west with Kennedy Road in the east. The road is immediately next to the Penang State Mosque.
Wu Lien Teh Garden, along with Wu Lien Teh Garden, was named after Dr Wu Lien Teh, the first medical student of Chinese descent to study at the University of Cambridge, and also the first Malaysian Chinese to be nominated for a Nobel Prize in Medicine. Dr Wu was born in Penang in 1879, and had his early education at the
Penang Free School.

Dr Wu is remembered for his many contributions to humanity, including his efforts to fight opium addiction, his success in checking the pneumonic plague in Manchuria, his founding of the Perak Library (now called the Tun Razak Library), and for running a clinic on Brewster Road in Ipoh, where he gave free consultation and treatment to the poor. He practised medicine until the age of 80, when he retired and moved back to Penang, but he passed away within a year of his return.
In addition to Wu Lien Teh Garden in Penang, he is also honoured with a road name in Ipoh. The Penang Free School, where he studied, names one of its sports houses after him. In 2019, a new road was created in George Town and given the name
Jalan Dr Wu Lien Teh.
