Xin Yi Yi Shipwreck, Permatang Damar Laut, Penang (7 March 2020)
Xin Yi Yi Shipwreck (GPS: 5.235569, 100.236949) is a shipwreck off the coast of
Permatang Damar Laut, Penang.
At around 5:30am in the early morning of 26 July 2018, the 43.6-meter Hong Kong vessel Xin Yi Yi crashed into the remains of another shipwreck nicknamed
Kapal Simen and got stuck there. The ship's captain did not see the warning buoy in the area marking the wreck of
Kapal Simen below. It caused
Xin Yi Yi to keel over. There were no casualties as the captain and crew were rescued by marine police.
There was an attempt to salvage
Xin Yi Yi in August 2018. The owner of the ship engaged shipping experts but after almost a year of trying to bring the ship up again, the owner decided to abandon it. In so doing, the owner of
Xin Yi Yi forfeited a RM1.5 million bond to the state Marine Department.
Today the hull of
Xin Yi Yi is visible from the coast of Permatang Damar Laut. To view it up close, as I did, you can join one of the island hopping trips organized by Lexis Suites Penang. Contact the hotel at 04-628 2888 for further details.
